On the road, there are some oxcarts to take you to the bottom of Sigiriya. Like this one, isn’t it beautiful? 🙂
Unlike China, in Sri Lanka, the throne is given to the youngest son instead of the elder one. So once upon a time, there was a historical story to Sigiriya. The elder son fought for his fate, killed his father, the king, took the crown away with him to Sigiriya and built up his own kingdom. Until his young brother brought an army to revenge their father, the elder brother lost the battle and killed himself by cutting his throat on the top of Sigiriya. You might imagine the whole Sigiriya was drowned in the blood of blood.

A ticket US$30, quite expensive(to me) but definitely worth buying it.

A peacefully beautiful lawn with a little hut in the corner…

Read it and feel the history, with the blue sky mirroring on the words.

Just one of the ponds…

A window of historical site.

The lotus leaves zigzagging

The white lotus flower in the pond.

My camera zoomed in from the bottom. You can see the moving shadows of tourists.

Walking on…

Turning my head, a blue sky left behind.

The grasses were shining. And a heart was carved on the stone…

Now going up the gleaming steps for more excitement ahead.

And more steps with more surprises…

Taking a rest, and more steps awaiting.

A silent corner, a trace of the ancient path and the root of life – where the water ran through.

Behind the silence, of course, there were sounds of foot steps and people talking.

Looking straight up, a poem appeared in my eyes.

In the middle, a mysterious piece of light shone like a face staring at the two giant rocks kissing each other.

Looking down, on the head of the rocks, there are ancient steps fading…

Seen from a different position, there is a totally different view.

Another poetic image with beautiful trees behind the ancient wall.

Because many places are so comfortable, many dogs were lying sleeping in peace.

On the foot, again the light makes the world different.

Looking into the distance, all flat, green and wild.

Right down at the foot, there is a natural square to rest before going up to the top and a wild trail to the forest.

Now looking down where you climbed up, the view was so beautiful…
Thank you for appreciating! Sigiriya Part 2 – Way Up is coming soon! 🙂

More fantastic memories conjured up by your gorgeous photos. Interested to see how the setting and steps have evolved since I visited back in early 1970s – we were walking up steps cut into the rock alongside wrought iron railings. Seems greener now too.

1970s? Wow, that must be very different from now. I was really impressed by the old way up to the top. I’ll post the Way Up soon, don’t miss it. I am really intrigered by “early 1970s”. 🙂

Really beautiful and a neat legend! I hope you weren’t to tired after the climb to the top–so many stairs and steep.

To tell the truth, Frankie, I fell asleep in the car soon after a big lunch when finished Sigiriya. But then half way thru, I was woken up to see the wild peacocks , which are more beautiful than the ones in a zoo.:)
